It’s coming home, it’s coming…Well not quite coming home but the start of the 2022 State League Season has finally arrived. After the night series and the recent round of the Australia Cup, the season proper get underway.
But unfortunately, for football nuts like myself, it now won’t be possible to see both Mandurah and Rockingham in action. Despite, the MUM FC v Rockingham City game being first advertised for a 6pm kick off, this has now been moved to a more normal time of 3pm. Rockingham will no doubt be pumped up by their recent 5-1 against Subiaco and will face a MUM FC side who recently won the night series competition. Added with this is the fact that MUM FC sign a couple of ex Rockingham players in the summer, in Zaw and Vaenas, the latter scoring twice in the night series final.
The game that will probably get the most coverage on Saturday will be the Olympic Kingsway v Mandurah City game. Olympic Kingsway Sports Club this week launched the Goals for Danny initiative to support their former striker Danny Hodgson in his recovery from an unprovoked assault more than six months ago. Fans are invited to sponsor the first team for every league goal they score at the northern end of Kingsway Reserve this season, starting with Saturday’s Round One clash with Mandurah City FC. All money raised will go to Danny. President Steve Nelkovski said: “We’d love to see the stands packed on game day with the local community cheering Goals for Danny.”
It is also my understanding that the Goals For Danny replica shirts will also be made available to buy on the day, if you would like to support Danny’s fundraising in that way.
